The US House of Representatives Jan. 6 Select Committee investigating the Capitol Hill attack has planned to subpoena those people involved in the false electors scheme.
The congressional panel announced on Friday that it had issued subpoenas to 14 individuals from seven states who had filed fake Electoral College certificates with the National Archives claiming that former US President Donald Trump had won in various battleground states that had gone to President Joe Biden in the 2020 presidential election.
"The Select Committee is seeking information about attempts in multiple states to overturn the results of the 2020 election, including the planning and coordination of efforts to send false slates of electors to the National Archives," Rep. Bennie Thompson (D-Miss.), the chairman of the select committee, said in a statement.
Those who were subpoenaed had reportedly all been GOP officials and activists from the seven states of Arizona, Georgia, Michigan, New Mexico, Nevada, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin.
"We believe the individuals we have subpoenaed today have information about how these so-called alternate electors met and who was behind that scheme. We encourage them to cooperate with the Select Committees investigation to get answers about January 6th for the American people and help ensure nothing like that day ever happens again," Thompson added.
At least seven people were killed in the Jan. 6 attack on Capitol Hill.
More than 700 have been arrested for crimes related to the breach so far.
Democrats believe the Jan. 6 attack was an insurrection based on disinformation spread by Trump, who alleges that he was the real winner of the 2020 US presidential election and not Biden.
On Jan. 6, Trump sent in his supporters to occupy Capitol Hill to pressure US Vice President Mike Pence, who was to certify the vote, to go beyond his ceremonial role and block the certification, thereby throwing the election to Trump. Pence refused.
